The head temple of the Daikakuji sect of the Shingon sect, which reveres Kobo Daishi Kukai as its founder. In the early Heian period, Emperor Saga built a villa to serve as his new residence for his marriage to Empress Danrin, and this was Rikyu Saga-in, the predecessor of Daikaku-ji Temple.
