He had a particularly strong interest in literature, and before the war he used poems and novels by Kazuhide Sato, Kenji Miyazawa, and Shinjiro Kurahara, and after the war by Okijuro Yasuda, Isamu Yoshii, Junichiro Tanizaki, and Hei Kusanobu as subjects for his woodblock paintings.
